WALKERS ARE WELCOME ’ ANNUAL REPORT 2011-12

Town: MARKET RASEN, Lincolnshire

Market Rasen was accredited in December 2010. A special WAW Launch Day was held on Saturday 7th May 2011. Four walks were organised all starting from the Market Place with Nigel Botting from the WAW Towns Organisation acting as formal starter for setting off all walks. The local MP, Edward Leigh, was in attendance and took part in one of the walks. Stalls were erected in the Market Place  and displayed tourism and walking information promoting the surrounding area, particularly the Lincolnshire Wolds AONB.

Local press was in attendance and a full colour photograph – see attached - of the Launch appeared in the Market Rasen Mail and in the winter edition of the Wolds AONB News with a print run of  12,000.  On the morning of the Launch, BBC Radio Lincolnshire broadcast a live interview with the WAW Steering Group Chairman, Cllr Mike Eckersley.

The Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival followed the launch by 2 weeks and during the Festival a variety of 8 walks were held in the Market Rasen area. Over 300 people took part in these walks.

Actions taken include :

  • Tourist Information racks are set up in two local supermarkets, CO-OP and Tesco in the town. These are regularly kept filled with A5 size walk leaflets for the local area.
  • Copies of local walks leaflets have been distributed to the local Tourist  Information Point located within a restaurant business in the town.
  • Three out of five ‘Gateway Walks From Market Rasen’ have  been overprinted to feature the ‘Walkers Are Welcome’ logo. The 3 leaflets are titled: “Walk In The Woods”; “A Route With a View” and “Following Woods And Mills”. The other 2 leaflets will feature the logo when a reprint is required.
  • “Interconnect Bus Walks” leaflets : there is still a good stock of these leaflets which include Market Rasen as part of a series of walks using the scheduled bus service.
  •  “Walkers Are Welcome Here” window stickers have been purchased and are to be distributed to local businesses including cafés, pubs and shops.
  • The railway station in Market Rasen has received a commendation by East Midlands Trains due to it’s improved state of cleanliness undertaken by a group of volunteer station adopters. This unstaffed station is now a much more welcoming approach for visitors arriving in the town by train.

 Priorities for 2012

  • It is recognised by the WAW Working Group that establishing a website featuring Market Rasen as a WAW Town, with events listing, is a main requirement for 2012.
  • Organise another promotional WAW event day featuring a series of led walks.
  • Undertake a mapping exercise of routes in Willingham Woods, which is a large Forestry Commission woodland close to the town.
